Audre Lorde was a revolutionary Black feminist, poet, essayist, and equal rights activist. Her work was influenced by her experiences as a queer Black woman and spoke to the importance of struggle for liberation among oppressed peoples and of organizing in coalition across differences of race, class, sexual orientation, gender, age and ability. The honors she received include Bill Whitehead Memorial Award and Walt Whitman Citation of Merit, making her the Poet Laureate of the State of New York for 1991-1992.
