bell hooks, aka Gloria Jean Watkins
The author, professor and activist published more than 30 books in her lifetime, writing about topics including race, feminism, capitalism and intersectionality. Her pseudonym, bell hooks, was chosen as a tribute for her mother and grandmother and the decision to not capitalize her name was taken so the focus could be on the substance of her work and ideas, more so than her personality. hooks taught at institutions such as Stanford, Yale, Oberlin College and The City College of New York. In 2004, hooks returned to Kentucky to teach at Berea College, where she also founded the bell hooks Institute to preserve her legacy and opened the bell hooks Center in September 2021.
