• Made from soft poplin in black, the Nehanda is a midi dress with a fitted bodice and marked waist. It has a sweetheart neckline and elastic shirring at the back for size adjustability. It has elbow length butterfly sleeves and its skirt is a classic bias cut.
• Nazerke is wearing XS and her height is 1.60m.
• Standard length from waistline to hem is 75cms. Length can vary a few cms depending on size and the product showcased may have been altered in length to best fit the model’s height.
• This fabric is a classic medium-weight 100% organic cotton poplin that is breathable while not being sheer.

Charwe, better known as Mbuya Nehanda, was a spirit medium of an ancestral spirit known as mhondoro. Nehanda led a rebellion against British occupation in the 19th century, when the British South Africa Company (BSAC), invaded Mashonaland (currently Zimbabwe) and confiscated the land and livestock of the native people living there to find gold. Charwe belonged to the Shona people, one of the local ethnic groups. Together with the mediums of the other two mhondoro, Mukwati in Matabeleland and Kaguvi in western Mashonaland, Nehanda organized and led her people’s resistance until she was captured. Nyakasikana was instrumental in ­planning where the Shona would make their attacks, ­targeting infrastructure, such as mines and farms, that were economically significant to the British. Nehanda’s last words before her execution by the British, “My bones shall rise again,” are believed to have predicted the second Chimurenga (“War of Liberation”), which resulted in the independence of present-day Zimbabwe.
