Psst, wanna know who May is?
Wong Liu Tsong, known by her stage name, Anna May Wong, was the first Chinese American film star in Hollywood. Her first starring role was in the 1922 Technicolor “The Toll of the Sea” when she was just 17 years old. Wong soon became a popular figure and a style icon, known for an eclectic wardrobe that incorporated the traditional Chinese dress. Even though she started getting more famous by the second, she continued to be cast in stereotypical roles and the anti-miscegenation laws prevented her from playing a romantic lead. In 1951 Wong became the first Asian American to lead an American television show, “The Gallery of Madame Liu-Tsong”, and in 1960 Wong became the first Asian American woman to be awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
