Psst, wanna know who Claude is?
Claude Cahun was queer Jewish photographer, French writer, Surrealist, and performance artist who was largely written out of art history until the late 1980s. Cahun is best known for striking photographic self-portraits, yet these personal images were often produced collaboratively with Marcel Moore, Cahun’s lifelong creative and romantic partner. Claude participated in Paris’ Surrealist movement in the 1920s and 1930s, creating photographs and written work that challenged binary ideas of gender, sexuality, and the self. Cahun’s photography, for which she is best known today, questioned gender identity, posing as both a feminine and masculine figure. Today, her works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, among others.
