Discover the legacy of
Mbuya Nehanda
Charwe, better known as Mbuya Nehanda, was a spirit medium of an ancestral spirit known as mhondoro. Nehanda led a rebellion against British occupation in the 19th century, when the British South Africa Company (BSAC), invaded Mashonaland (currently Zimbabwe) and confiscated the land and livestock of the native people living there to find gold. Charwe belonged to the Shona people, one of the local ethnic groups. Together with the mediums of the other two mhondoro, Mukwati in Matabeleland and Kaguvi in western Mashonaland, Nehanda organized and led her people’s resistance until she was captured. Nyakasikana was instrumental in planning where the Shona would make their attacks, targeting infrastructure, such as mines and farms, that were economically significant to the British. Nehanda’s last words before her execution by the British, “My bones shall rise again,” are believed to have predicted the second Chimurenga (“War of Liberation”), which resulted in the independence of present-day Zimbabwe.
