Lilian Ngoyi

Despite her key role in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, details about Lilian Ngoyi’s life remain sparse. While she was working at a garment factory between 1945 and 1956, she joined and became active in the Garment Workers Union, under the leadership of Solly Sachs. She was South Africa’s “mother of the Black resistance”, the first woman member of the national executive committee – the core leadership of the African National Congress (ANC), the resistance movement that would later become the government of a democratic South Africa, and, also, one of the leaders of the country’s famous Women’s March.
