A notable fighter for independence from the Spanish control in Colombia, La Pola was part of the revolutionaries, who wanted independence from Spain. Together with one of her brothers, she infiltrated in the capital city of Bogota and became a spy amongst the loyalists. She was, unfortunately, caught and charged with treason and espionage. On the day of her death sentence, she proved just how courageous she was. She chanted, cursed the Spanish and faced the firing squad. She remains a hero, her face being on currency, and the day of her death is known as “The Day of Colombian Women”.
