Psst, wanna know who Miriam Makeba is?
Miriam was a South African singer that stood against apartheid. She played in movie that got her an award given to her in Venice, Italy. Unfortunately, her home country, South Africa, exiled her. She kept performing and ended up meeting Harry Belafonte and Marilyn Monroe. She always kept her hair natural and inspired “the Afro look”. She became the first black woman to have a top 10 worldwide hit with her song, “Pata Pata”. The only person that could convince her to go back to South Africa was Nelson Mandela, and her people ended up welcoming her with open arms and nicknaming her “Mama Africa”.
