Elsie Inglis was a Scottish pioneering medic and suffragist. After founding her own medical college, she built a maternity hospital for the poor of Edinburgh and no, it doesn’t stop here, it get even better. She’s got a long history of not putting up with men’s bullshit, amidst which the most notable being when she tried to set up a women’s medical unit to operate for the allies during the First World War — and was told by the War Office ‘My good lady, go home and sit still. Fortunately she did not “sit still”, she hustled and with the aid of several donations she’s managed to secure, she ended up running 14 hospital units across Europe.
