Few things are more sensual (in our opinion) than a pussy bow shirt because nothing says power dressing quite like owned up femininity. Because, yes, feminine does not mean weak, on the contrary. We’re strong as hell, whether we like a good ol’ pussy bow or a simple, oversized white shirt. This shirt is Angela’s little sister, with the bow strings shorter for when you’re not feeling like overstated.
Psst, wanna know who Clara was?
Clarissa “Clara” Barton is most widely acknowledged as the founder of the American branch of the Red Cross. Her life’s work cemented her as one of the most important figures in the history of social work and nursing alike, and millions of people from across the globe have benefited from her contributions to American healthcare. She began her lifetime of service at the beginning of the Civil War, where she arranged medical care for Union troops who were wounded in the 1861’s Baltimore Riots.
Born into a middle-class family from Oxford Massachusetts, Barton began her career as many women of the time did, working as a school teacher. When the war began in 1861, however, she had moved to Washington D.C. where she worked as a clerk in the United States Patent Office–the first woman in U.S. history to hold this position in the Federal Government.
The impact of Barton’s contributions to society have been far reaching, especially her efforts in bringing the International Red Cross to the United States. The American chapter of the Red Cross has greatly expanded, now including more than 20,000 volunteers, and their disaster response nurses play an important role in their communities both in peacetime and in war, helping communities in many nations recover from natural disasters, terrorist acts, and industrial accidents.

Psst, wanna know who Mary was?

Mary Treat (1830-1923) was a prolific scientific writer who earned a reputation as “the world’s most famous and industrious woman naturalist” at a time when few women were professionally engaged in biology.

Among Treat’s most important published works is the 1885 book “Home Studies in Nature,” wherein Treat considered carnivorous insect life and its diverse evolutions. In it, readers can witness her insertion of wry wit into scientific study, managing to engage readers in the drama of entomology as well as inviting them to participate in analysis rather than passively read her observations.

Psst, wanna know who Charlotte was?

Charlotte Perkins Gilman was a feminist writer, lecturer, and thinker at the turn of the 20th century. Despite her lack of formal education, she authored Women in Economics, a foundational text of early feminism, and became known as a preeminent sociologist, philosopher, and social critic. Her works of fiction represented the psychological impact of traditional female roles on housewives and mothers, and her utopian novel Herland inspired Dr. William Moulton Marsten to create his character Wonder Woman as a model of “strong, free, courageous womanhood.”

Charlotte’s legacy of spitfire feminism, economic empowerment for women, and a more just and egalitarian society lives on in the work of modern activists and organizations devoted to social progress. Her feminist utopian novels, in which women live separate from men on an island and use parthenogenesis to reproduce, were some of the first imaginings of science fiction, and are widely acknowledged as foundational texts for William Morsten’s creation of Wonder Woman.

Charlotte demonstrated that that women were strong and capable through her own recovery and independence, proving that:

It is not that women are really smaller-minded, weaker-minded, more timid and vacillating, but that whosoever, man or woman, lives always in a small, dark place, is always guarded, protected, directed and restrained, will become inevitably narrowed and weakened by it.

Psst, wanna know who Nancy Love was?

Nancy Harkness Love was a trailblazing WWII pilot and commander who was instrumental in the founding of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) of WWII, the first women in history trained to fly American military aircraft.
Nancy’s planning and persistence proved to her Army superiors that women could serve the Armed Forces during wartime. Her personal prowess in a succession of increasingly complex Army airplanes opened the way for the women ferry pilots who served under her. Women flew everything the Army built. Nancy believed women pilots should be handled the same as the male pilots—allowed simply to advance based on their flying abilities and not be segregated in a separate command. She and Jackie Cochran were diametrically opposed on this. Cochran wanted a separate women’s air corps established under a woman commander. Today, it is Nancy’s way that has taken root in the American military system, but establishing it took the better part of forty years.
Seventy-five years after learning to fly, Nancy Harkness Love was enshrined among aviation’s luminaries in the National Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton, Ohio, on July 16, 2005. She was the ninth woman inducted. What she did enroute to the Hall of Fame is the stuff of mid-20th century American patriotism and resolve.

A classic pleated skirt is a staple in anyone’s wardrobe. It’s just that our design is even better than a classic: we kept the pleats only on the side, so the skirt doesn’t add any extra volume on your tummy and accentuates your waist and hips. The length is just cheeky enough, so be careful when taking a spin 😜

Psst, wanna know who Huda was?

Huda Shaarawi (1879–1947) was an Egyptian feminist who influenced not only women in Egypt but throughout the Arab world. She was a pioneer in feminism, and brought to light the restrictive world of upper-class women in her book The Harem Years, published in 1987.

Huda had a hand in many “firsts” for women in Egyptian society. In 1908, she founded the first philanthropic society run by Egyptian women, where they offered services for poor women and children. She believed that having women run such projects would challenge the view that women are created for men’s pleasure and in need of protection. In 1910, she opened a school for girls focused on academics, rather than teaching practical skills like midwifery which was common at the time.

Hoda Shaarawi continued to lead the Egyptian Feminist Union until her death, demonstrating and organizing the fight for women’s rights in the new Egypt. She represented Egypt at women’s conferences around the world, advocating for peace and disarmament. She was also a member (and in 1935, vice-president) of the International Alliance of Women for Suffrage and Equal Citizenship, and founding president of the Arab Feminist Union in 1945.

Psst, wanna know who Émilie was?

About 150 years before Marie Curie moved to France, Émilie du Châtelet was busy making her own scientific breakthroughs. This mathematician, physicist and philosopher had a brilliant mind, and is especially known for her translation and commentary of Isaac Newton’s Principia, a physics book. While many women were simply following societal pressures to be good housewives, Châtelet was critiquing the works of famous philosophers and writing physics books—yet another French woman who shattered boundaries for the better.

Psst, wanna know who Julia is?

In the early 1960s, women weren’t allowed to participate in races that were over 880 yards. Popular opinion of the time deemed distance running harmful to women’s reproductive abilities. But a young Chase loved to run; regularly logging at least 60 miles per week. She even managed to participate in running competitions as a teenager, however unfortunately her career ended abruptly due to an accident.

“I think I was the only kid who liked missing the school bus,” Chase wrote. “It meant I could run the mile and a half through back fields and along the salt marsh to get there. It was a giddy feeling of freedom. From the time I was five I loved to run. I was flying.”

Psst, wanna know who Anna May was?

Anna May Wong was the first Chinese-American movie star and the first Asian-American actress to gain international fame. She used her fame and influence to talk about and protest the racist practices in Hollywood, protesting against racist depictions of Chinese characters, and opening up more significant and starring roles for herself and many actors of color to follow.
Anna used her celebrity to make political statements and attract attention to important causes. She was very outspoken about Japan’s relations with China, and even wrote a criticism of Japan’s invasion of Manchuria in 1931. She also raised money for causes, auctioning off her costumes and donating money to Chinese aid and writing a cookbook and giving the proceeds to United China Relief.

In her acting career, she refused outright to play any stereotyped roles, and spoke out against Hollywood’s racism in interviews. She began acting exclusively in low-budget B movies where she could play strong, well-written Chinese characters instead of stereotypes.
Anna May Wong persevered all her life in a career where she was constantly discriminated against, no matter where she traveled. She worked hard all her life to be successful against the odds, and used her success to fight for others and help pave the way for actors of color today.
Hollywood still white-washes movies, has stereotyped roles, and discriminates in casting today. Yet, Asian actors and other actors of color have so many more opportunities today because of Anna. She was one of the first actors to speak out against racism in Hollywood.

Psst, wanna know who Bessie was?

Bessie Coleman (1892-1926) was the first African-American woman to become a licensed airplane pilot. She persevered through discrimination and danger in order to fly in the early days of aviation. Like many aviators of the early 20th century, she made her living as a barnstormer, similar to today’s stunt pilots. People lined up to see “Queen Bess” or “Brave Bessie” in action.

Psst, wanna know who Constance is?

The author Constance Fenimore Woolson (1840-1894), who wrote five novels for adults and dozens of stories, was widely considered during her lifetime one of the most important American fiction writers of the nineteenth century.

Woolson’s work, often compared to that of James and George Eliot, was considered by many to be superior to that of any living American woman writer, and some believed she deserved the title of America’s “novelist laureate.” The leading magazine and book publisher Harper & Brothers sought and received an exclusive contract with her. James paid tribute to her in his collection Partial Portraits (1888), discovering in her stories about the Reconstruction-era South “a remarkable minuteness of observation and tenderness of feeling on the part of one who evidently did not glance and pass, but lingered and analyzed.”
